How do fathers celebrate their special day in countries around the world?

In Mexico, fathers run 21km through the city. Finnish fathers sleep in and enjoy their favorite breakfast.

Germans celebrate Father’s Day on the sixth Sunday after Easter. Father’s Day is called Vatertag and it is celebrated on Mannertag (Man’s Day). The women stay home with the children and the dads enjoy the holiday doing man things together for the day.

Thailand celebrates Father’s Day at the beginning of December on the birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the father of the nation. Traditionally, everyone wears yellow and the fathers are presented with canna flowers. This is a national holiday.

In South Africa, Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June. The tradition is similar to that of the United States. Children give their father’s cards and gifts. They fish together hoping to catch something for dinner.

Those who have grown up in India know how thrilling kite flying can be. There are several kite-flying festivals during the warm months in India.

Uttarayan, The Festival of Kites

This event is also referred to as the International Kite Festival. This is one of the largest Indian festivals. Every year, it takes place on Makar Sankranti. Makar Sankranti, or Maghi it is commonly called, the day the sun transitions into Makara (Capricorn). It calls the end of the winter solstice and the beginning to longer days. This is one of the few festivals in India that follows the solar cycle instead of the lunar cycle. Uttarayan falls on June 14 every year. This festival is open to everyone, regardless of race, gender, or nationality.

The International Kite Festival is hosted in Ahmedabad and claims participants and spectators from across the world. Eight to ten million people attend this event each year.

It is believed that kite flying was brought to India by Muslims in Persia. Kings and Nawabs found the sport entertaining and used it to show off their prowess and skills. Eventually, kite flying trickled down through the people and became the most popular sport in Gujarat.

The first International Kite Festival was celebrated in 1989. People from around the world came to display their innovative and unique kites.

Telangana International Kite Festival

The Telangana International Kite Festival began in 2016 and is celebrated on Jan. 13-15 each year at the Parade Grounds in Hyderabad.

In 2019, the event hosted 27 kite clubs and a footfall of over 50,000. The kite-flying festival includes interactive workshops on kite making and other cultural activities. The Telangana International Kite Festival is free for everyone.

One of the most popular events if the night-time-kite-flying that takes place the first two nights of the festival. On the third night, there are closing ceremonies, which include a multitude of cultural activities, dancing, and music.
