There is no room for racism, excessive force, corruption, or improper behavior of any kind in the police department. There is, however, more to consider.
Each police department has its own culture. It could be a culture of leadership and good training. It could also be a culture of bad leadership and poor training.
Each community has a distinct culture. It could be a prosperous community with multiple opportunities. It could be a poor community that lacks jobs, educational opportunities, and sometimes areas of immigrants struggling with language and a new culture.
It is the responsibility of the police department to train officers and maintain professional standards.
Government agencies are driven by funding. If the funding is reduced, the service will be reduced. Eliminate funding and the services will also be eliminated.
According to the writing staff at The Buffalo News desk, the police are the face of government. When there is a crisis, they are the first line of order.
The idea is to stop funding the police department and instead funnel that money into marginalized communities where police are needed most. Minneapolis announced their intent to defund and disband the city’s police department.
Some cities are considering an entirely different kind of community-led public safety. It also means the police do not exist to protect and serve. There are many members of marginalized communities that do not feel protected by the police.
